Over 16 million pints of blood are used each year in the United States, and every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. requires a blood transfusion. Around 35% of the American population is eligible to donate blood, and yet only 5% does. This leaves a devastating blood shortage both in the U.S. and around the world, as other countries struggle with a similar question: how do we get more donors?

On November 6, beginning at 7 AM, Eastern will be hosting its own blood drive with Versiti Blood Center helping coordinate this opportunity. Open slots will be available for this event in the Auxiliary Gym. Appointments must be made beforehand, so be sure to check in with proper identification such as your driver’s license, or school ID! Anyone who is 16 years or older is allowed and encouraged to donate. However, those who are 16 years old must have parental or guardian permission and bring in the signed consent form, which can be found on Versiti’s website.

Being prepared to give blood is extremely important as well. Certain height and weight requirements must be met in order to be eligible to donate, so once again check Versiti’s website for more information! Proper hydration, nutrition, and rest are also required to ensure the process goes safely and smoothly for everyone involved. Make sure that in the days leading up to your donation, drink lots of water and eat iron-rich foods before getting a good night’s sleep. As another measure to provide everyone with enough food, on the morning of the blood drive, parent volunteers will be providing a pancake breakfast for all donors! Snacks and beverages will also be available for donors after giving blood.

This is a wonderful opportunity to get volunteer hours — and get out of class — while making a difference in the community. The goal donation amount is 42 units and there are 80 time slots for volunteers, so remember to sign up. All English classes next week will have QR codes and flyers explaining more details. More information regarding the blood drive and where to sign up will be coming out soon, so keep an eye out for announcements and posters around the school!

Anna Alt, Editor
Anna Alt is a senior at Forest Hills Eastern. This is her second year on the Hawk Herald staff and first year as the Editor-In-Chief. In school you can find her in National Honors Society, Kids Food Basket, Volunteer Club, and most commonly, struggling over her AP Chemistry notes. Outside school, however, you’ll often see her on (hopefully not in) the Grand River rowing with her team. If she’s not spotted there, then she’s at home with her favorite chocolate chip cookies on the couch watching the wondrous show “Bluey.” After graduating, Anna hopes to pursue a career in either Pediatrics or Neuroscience.
