Movie theaters have been around for a long time— 128 years to be exact. The history of the movie theater goes back to the Lumiere family: sons Auguste and Louis and father Antoine. In France, 1894, Antoine Lumiere had seen a demonstration of Eison’s Kinetoscope. Though Antoine was impressed, he told his sons that they could make something even better. In 1895, Louis Lumiere invented the Cinematographe, which was able to act as both a camera and a projector. This Cinematograph was a huge success as it proved to be lighter, smaller, and it used less film than Edison’s Kinetoscope. Finally, in 1896, the Lumieres opened up their first cinema to screen their first film known as Workers Leaving the Lumiere Factory.
Although the Lumiere brothers are generally credited for the beginning of cinema, the film industry in Hollywood was well underway in the 20th century and has grown to become a major force in the film industry today. Hollywood is known to be the oldest film industry because of some of the earliest film studios and production companies. A few of the most noteworthy hollywood films of all time include The Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, Jaws, Gladiator, and It’s a Wonderful Life. The Grammy awards have been around since 1959. Some of the most recent award winners for Best Picture include Oppenheimer in 2024, Everything Everywhere All At Once in 2023, CODA in 2022, Nomadland in 2021, and Parasite in 2020.
