When you enter the school room, what food do you gravitate to? The taco bar? The pizza? The food of the day? The bosco sticks? Rarely do people think about the school sandwich. The sandwiches are… forgotten. Senior Bethany Narducci even questioned, “They have school sandwiches?” The school sandwiches are being overlooked. Starting now, the sandwiches will be remembered.
Are school sandwiches up to par? Just the phrase ‘school lunch’ has a negative connotation. Is it just years of society telling us that the school sandwich is bad or could it be just flat-out gross?
I set out to find out the truth. To truly understand the experience of a school sandwich, I purchased a lunch to try it myself. As I entered the lunch room, I immediately gravitated to the center console in search of a sandwich. I had to push through the tide of students in line. Once I got through the tsunami of students, I finally reached the holy grail. My prize was sitting in a slightly misted-over plastic container, looking glorious.
First thoughts: when I first saw the sandwich in the container, I rethought my decision because I could barely see the sandwich. I did know that it was a turkey sandwich due to it’s label. Once I opened the container, I was in for a sweet surprise. The sandwich had a plethora of toppings, including turkey, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. The bread looked to be whole grain but not too dry.
Adding a little pizzazz: the school sandwich alone is passable, but adding your toppings can make the sandwich evolve. The taco bar and burger area both have additional toppings for people to add to their bowls or burgers. Using those toppings, you can make your sandwich taste immaculate. The simple addition of more lettuce or one more tomato can completely change the outcome of your sandwich. Once you have left the lunch room you can add condiments to your sandwich. You can add mustard or mayo- or you can concoct your very own special sauce. Senior Rachel Hyun creates spicy mayo by mixing mayo with hot sauce. The kick from the hot sauce can elevate your sandwich in the right direction.
After all the effort put into making the perfect sandwich, the real question was taste. The first bite was surprisingly very scrumptious. The combination of spicy mayo, turkey, lettuce, and tomato leads to a great sandwich. The entire sandwich was very delicious, with the only problem being the bread. Halfway through the consumption, the bread began to fall apart which made it very difficult to eat the sandwich.
The entire experience on a scale from one to ten would have to be a 6.8 out of 10. The overall taste of the sandwich was surprisingly very good. The toppings and the sauce proved to be great additions to the sandwich. The business of the lunch area and the bread brought the score down, but I would definitely recommend a sandwich to someone looking for food.
