With the winter season beginning to creep in through a small flurry of snowflakes, many people seem to be gaining a holiday mood. Several holidays are celebrated through the month of December including, Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year. Within the city of Grand Rapids, several local attractions center themselves around these popular celebrations and the winter season as a whole. Here’s a compilation of some of the largest winter events within Grand Rapids that you should add to your bucket list!
Christkindl
Located in Downtown Grand Rapids, Christkindl begins November 17 and continues until December 23. Centered around traditional European celebrations of the upcoming and gift-bearing Christmas, Christkindl includes local artisans, food vendors, holiday entertainment, and fun for all. Although the origin of this celebration is around Christmas, anyone can enjoy this fun event! Friends and family can try new, delicious dishes, and explore exciting, competitive winter games such as curling!
Ice Skating
Outdoor ice skating has become increasingly popularized in recent years. Who wouldn’t want to skate under fluffy snowflakes surrounded by holiday lights? Opening on November 30 and continuing until February 25, the Rosa Parks Circle will be open for outdoor skating. Friends and family may rent skates and take a turn skating around the circle in the middle of Downtown Grand Rapids. Due to its location, heating up afterward with steamy beverages and tasty foods is simple and convenient with the many shops in the area including Local Mocha Coffee, Bitter End Coffee House, and Madcap Coffee Company.
Grand Menorah Lighting
During the days of Hanukkah, a grand menorah is lit each night in the Calder Plaza. Friends and family who wish to witness the lighting may gather for a community event filled with collective celebration and fun. Food, photos, and gifts will be available as well!
World Of Winter
Taking place from January 12 to March 10 of this coming 2024 year, the World Of Winter two-month extravaganza will take place. This includes music entertainment such as live bands, singers, and DJs, along with beautiful art exhibits spread across the greater downtown area of Grand Rapids. Outdoor dining will also be available with several local vendors and restaurants supplying delicious food and drinks to visitors. If experimenting with new crafts or hobbies sounds like something more interesting, lessons on lantern making, painting, and yoga are also available throughout the two months!
Cannonsburg
Home to winter biking, skiing, snowboarding, and tubing, Cannonsburg provides the perfect ground for friends and family entertainment! Open throughout the winter months, this winter sports location allows people of all skills to participate. If you’re looking to learn how to ski or snowboard, lessons are available, or if you’re feeling brave, you can rent a pair of skis or snowboard and attempt the bunny slope yourself. From there, you can work your way up to larger hills or cool tricks using the jumps and tubes. Regardless of your expertise, Cannonsburg is the perfect place to improve and learn!
