At Forest Hills Eastern, some students take their entrepreneurial efforts to the next level, proving that hard work and creativity can go hand in hand. More students are finding ways to start their own businesses while still in school, rather than being hired at outside businesses. No longer waiting for college or traditional job opportunities, students are taking control of their own professional development early on.
Students who create their own jobs while balancing academics show impressive resourcefulness and determination. Whether starting a small business or offering services based on their skills, they gain practical experience while earning money. This entrepreneurial mindset helps them develop essential skills like time management, problem-solving, and adaptability. Though juggling work and studies can be demanding, students who create their own opportunities often find the flexibility they need to succeed in both areas, building a solid foundation for future success while managing the responsibilities of both work and school.
Out of every hard working student at Eastern there are always those who go above and beyond. One of those students is senior Audry Zawacki, owner of her very own nail business. Her first customer? Herself. Audry began doing nails towards the end of her junior year, “ I noticed that I was spending way too much every two weeks on just my nails alone.” To counteract this problem, she bought her own nail supplies: nail tips, nail polish, nail curer. According to Zawacki, “My customers consist of my friends and family so far, but I’m hoping to grow.” Her small business can be found on instagram at nail.by.audry.
Starting a business through social media has become one of the most effective ways for students to grow their ventures. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok allow young entrepreneurs, like Zawacki, to showcase their work and build a customer base without a large budget. By sharing photos, tutorials, and customer reviews, they can engage followers and attract new business. For many student entrepreneurs, social media offers a cost-effective way to build essential skills in digital marketing and branding, which are valuable for future career growth.
Student-run businesses often begin with a simple idea, fueled by a desire to solve a problem or provide a unique service. They’re not about just earning money—it’s the value in learning responsibility, customer service, and financial management.
