As Tuesday morning rolled around, Forest Hills Eastern students participated in the start of the infamous Hawk Teams. Every student in each grade, led by the seniors, joined in on the fun tradition of field games in order to get to know the students they’ll be with for the rest of the year.
The day began with the senior Hawk Team leaders pulling their freshmen out of class during second hour for a fun group activity in the stadium. They were split into three groups, enjoying rounds of scavenger hunts, races, and rock-paper-scissors tournaments. The day continued with the seniors grabbing their sophomores out of third hour. Each sophomore followed their senior leader and co-leader onto the football field, where they got to know each other with questionnaire sheets and a competitive scavenger hunt. Finally, juniors were pulled out of class during their 5th hour for some fun in the sun, as the stadium became increasingly toasty. Friendships were formed on this competitive yet amiable day, and students are excited to keep hanging out in their Hawk Teams.
As per tradition, seniors are selected as hawk team leaders, for Upper-A, Lower-A, and B-Hall. Eastern has been known for its fierce rivalry among hallways, and this year will be no different. Each hall has their very own fight chant to hype up their team members, and their own colors that are coordinated to their teams; black for B-Hall, white for Upper-A, and red for Lower-A. Upper-A’s fight chant goes as such, “ Upper-A all the way“. Lower-A’s fight chant is based off of Penn State’s chant, reciting, “ We are Lower-A”. B-Hall’s fight chant reflects a current chant, saying, “Ooh, it’s cold in here. There must be some B-Hall in the atmosphere.” Throughout the day, students cheered each other on, celebrated their victories, and even laughed off their losses.
Hawk Teams at Forest Hills Eastern aren’t just about competition; they’re about creating a sense of community and belonging among students. It’s a day every other week where friendships are forged, memories are made, and the school spirit shines brightly. As students returned to their classes, they carried with them the bonds and experiences that make Forest Hills Eastern a unique and vibrant place to learn and grow.
Looking ahead, Hawk Teams provide an excellent opportunity for students to develop relationships throughout the school year. Meeting once every other week, these teams engage in competitive games, challenges, and even door decorating competitions. By promoting teamwork and creativity in a relaxed environment, Hawk Teams offer students a chance to unwind while also strengthening school spirit and connections with their peers. This continued engagement helps create a supportive atmosphere where students can feel more connected and involved in their school community.
